PSPA Singers I Have A Dream Beneficiary – National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM)

The National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM) was established in 1996 and it is the first non-profit organisation in South East Asia that provides rehabilitation and support to stroke survivors and their families. Its Founder Chairman, Janet Yeo, founded NASAM in 1995 after her remarkable recovery from stroke. Her story inspired and drew overwhelming response from the public, especially from stroke patients who wanted to learn the methods that led to her remarkable recovery. As stroke is the largest cause of disability in most developed countries and in Malaysia, Janet recognised the absolute necessity for a stroke organisation that would offer a lifeline to stroke survivors. More importantly she wanted to give them the opportunity to regain as normal a life as possible within the limits of their disabilities.

The primary aim of NASAM is to improve the quality of life of stroke survivors and their families and in the long term, help reduce the risk of stroke amongst Malaysians through awareness and prevention advocacy. NASAM’s mission is to inform the public that There is Life after Stroke through proper rehabilitation and to promote the concept of stroke awareness and stroke prevention. To this end, the visionary aim is to establish a stroke specific rehabilitation centre in every major town throughout Malaysia and to provide stroke rehabilitation to as many stroke survivors as possible, especially the poor and those living in rural areas.

NASAM provides rehabilitation services for stroke survivors and a place for them to interact, acquire group support and information on stroke care and stroke prevention. Recreational activities are also organized to enhance the quality of life for stroke survivors.

Currently, over 400 stroke survivors attend therapy sessions daily in nine NASAM centres and many have discovered there is life after stroke. NASAM looks into the physical, psychological and emotional aspects of stroke survivors and provides holistic rehabilitation therapy with the aim of getting stroke survivors sufficiently recovered to return to mainstream life.
